World Recreational Fishing Conference Online

the Netherlands, 28 & 30 June 2021

Conference: 28 & 30 June 2021 starting 13.00 CEST until 17.30 CEST

Normally the World Recreational Fishing Conference is hosted every three years somewhere in the world. It was suppost to be in the Netherlands in 2020. Due to the Covid pandemic it is still not possible to host a live event of this size, even in 2021. But, there will be a WRFC Online event in 2021 to keep us all connected. Event days will be 28 and 30 June 2021! The event will be free of charge so we all hope to see you virtually on these days. We have a very nice program and the mini conference will have great opportunities to talk with colleagues through the Online platform. So be there and register as soon as possible.

Destination – the Netherlands Online

The event will be online, hosted on the platform of Let’s Get Digital. This platform will have a lobby, 3 large rooms for the presentations a network carrousel, breakout rooms for discussions and the possibility to talk to eachother seperately in private rooms.

The platform gives a look and feel as if we all meet live!

The conference is a nice teaser for the live event WRFC 9 in 2022 and it will be interesting for i.e.:

  • fisheries scientists
  • (aquatic)ecologists
  • sociologist
  • fisheries policymakers
  • students on these fields
  • employees of angling asociations
  • consultancy companies

Organizing hosts

The conference will be hosted by The Royal Dutch Angling Association, ‘Sportvisserij Nederland’ in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, the Radboud University Nijmegen and Wageningen University and Research.

Sportvisserij Nederland supports and advises over 800 Dutch angling clubs with membership administration, restocking and maintaining fishing waters, animal welfare issues and fishing lessons at public schools. Sportvisserij Nederland is both member and chair of the European Anglers Alliance (EAA), member of the Dutch Olympic committee and sports federation NOC-NSF and works together with several environmental organizations… CONTINUE READING>

Why we host the WRFC Online

Recreational fishing is the third largest sport in the Netherlands, closely following soccer (1) and tennis (2). Above the age of 45 the sport even has the highest participation. With an overall participation of 8% it is one of the largest outdoor activities in the Netherlands.

An important motivation for us to host the WRFC is that in the Netherlands research dedicated to recreational fishing concerning the behaviour of fishermen as well as socioeconomic and social impact is only just developing. All water bodies in our country are assessed in terms of fish stocks, protecting and restocking, habitat restoration etc. We face large challenges to protect and maintain sport fishing possibilities in Europe since urbanization and nature restoration are common and… CONTINUE READING>

WRFC Online 2021

Recreational fishing in a changing world
Our world is changing rapidly. We humans are changing. Urbanization, overfishing and animal welfare are well known issues. The sport fishing sector will have to deal with these challenges. During this conference science and knowledge on these subjects will be presented and discussed.

Impact and chances
The impact of the above mentioned changes together with climate change, restoration projects as well as the globalization and the impact of dispersion of exotic species is investigated by many scientists. This conference is the place to get updated, discuss or present your results and talk about challenges and solutions in recreational fisheries.

Scientific board
The scientific board consist of 20 scientists of all around the globe. There are WRFC experienced board members as well as some new members and off course members of our country. Especially we tried to find female fisheries scientist willing to participate.
